Frequently Asked Questions

What is Family Weekend?

Family Weekend is a chance for family members to visit and experience NIU with their student. In collaboration with the DeKalb and surrounding communities, NIU presents programming and activities for family members of all ages. We hope you’ll join us this September 8-10!

Who can attend Family Weekend?

Family Weekend is open to all families and community members!  We invite parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sibling, alumni and friends to come to campus and enjoy all of our scheduled events.

How does the schedule work?

Each family’s itinerary for Family Weekend may vary! We do our best to host a variety of events that will appeal to a wide array of interests, so there may be some events scheduled with overlapping start times. It is up to you and your family to decide what activities you participate in.

Many Family Weekend events do not require any pre-registration and are free. Make sure to review the Family Weekend schedule to learn more.

Where do I register?

You will register for football tickets, Bag Toss Tournament tickets and Family Breakfast tickets through the Family Weekend Registration. Tickets for many of the other events offered by off-campus partners can be purchased through the links provided in the “Event Details” section of the schedule. On-site registration may be available for some events—be sure to ask at check-in if you would like to register for last minute event tickets.

What do we do when we first get to campus and how do we meet up with our student?

Family Weekend Check-in is a great place to meet up with your student. Depending on what day you plan to arrive on campus, you can either meet at the Holmes Student Center on Friday night before heading to Bingo or on Saturday at “The Yard” as you prepare to cheer on the Huskies as  they play Eastern Illinois University.

All families who have made payments through Family Weekend registration must check-in to receive their materials and tickets.

Can my student pick up my registration materials?

Yes, students are welcome to check-in for their families. Check-in will take place on Friday, September 8, in the Holmes Student Center, Gallery Lounge from 5-8 p.m. and at “The Yard” on Saturday, September 9 before the football game. Registration materials will only be available during the scheduled check-in times.

How can I purchase tickets to the Family Weekend football game?

Tickets for east side seating (student section) can be purchased through Family Weekend Registration for $15.  Students with a valid OneCard do not need to purchase a ticket since they get into regular home games free. If students and families want to purchase tickets for west side seating, tickets are sold through Athletics at $30 per ticket.

What side of the stadium should I sit on?

Families are welcome to sit on either side of the stadium; however, pricing for the east side and west side of the stadium will vary.  If you would like to enjoy the game with your student, we recommend purchasing tickets for east side seating through Family Weekend registration.  Tickets for east side seating are $15 apiece. If your family would prefer not to sit in the student section, you will need to purchase your tickets separately through Athletics. Tickets for general seating on the west side of the stadium are $25 per ticket.

What should I expect during family tailgate and at the football game?

Many people come out to show their Huskie spirit at NIU football games! You can expect there to be tailgating for the football game. Tailgating happens on either side of the stadium You’ll find the official Family Weekend tailgate on the west side of the stadium. We’ll be in what’s called, “The Yard.” Due to the high amount of people that attend tailgating and football games, make sure to plan extra time and patience for parking and walking.

What can I expect at the tailgate?

Enjoy a family-oriented tailgate experience at “The Yard.” Stop by the Orientation and Family Connections tent to cheer on families participating in the Bag Toss Tournament or grab a bite to eat from a vendor.  Food and drink will be for purchase at various locations in “The Yard”. There will also be a huge TV screen and a “kids zone” with plenty of activities.
