Transfer Family Orientation

Families of students starting at NIU in summer or fall 2017 are invited to attend Family Orientation.

Things to remember about Family Orientation:

  • Family Orientation is an opportunity for you to meet key academic and support staff who will play a key role in your student’s success. Sessions at orientation cover important topics such as: finances, health/wellness and safety.
  • You’ll attend sessions with and without your student. Although you’ll get to meet your student’s academic college, you don’t attend advising/registration with him/her.
  • Family Orientation is designed for parents and other adult family members. Information presented may not be appropriate for younger siblings or children.
  • A separate registration fee is required in order to attend Family Orientation. The fee includes one meal, parking, full day of sessions and helpful materials. Your student can register for you for Family Orientation when they register for orientation. (June, July and August sessions only)

Family Orientation will introduce you to key academic and support services available to your student. You’ll meet faculty, staff and current students who will share information and advice with you about student success at NIU.  Family Orientation is also a time to questions answered and help you prepare you for the transition of your student attending NIU.

Family Orientation is designed for parents and other adult family members. Information presented may not be appropriate for younger siblings or children.

Length of Family Orientation: Family Orientation begins at with check-in at 8 a.m. The last Family Orientation session ends at 2:15 p.m. Depending on how long your student is in advising/registration, you may need to wait for him/her to finish. You’ll attend some sessions with your students and others separately. After formal sessions conclude, families can visit with Financial Aid or tour campus.

Meals: The Family Orientation fee covers lunch with your student in a university dining hall (families of students who attend a fall orientation program only).

Advising/Registration at Orientation: During Family Orientation, families will get to meet with their student’s academic college. However, families do not attend academic advising and registration. You’ll meet back up with your student after advising activities have concluded.

Check-in: Check-in for orientation between 8-8:30 a.m. If new students arrive after 8:30 a.m., they’ll be asked to reschedule.
